Review & Description

Fun and games, love and laughs - all under one roof! Full House is back for a sunny seventh season with 24 episodes full of remember-when joy. This time around, Jesse inherits the Smash Club, the venue where his band used to play. Joey falls for a comedienne who's into insult humor (sooo unTanner.) And Danny wins a perfect-couple contest with an unlikely ?fianc?e.he girls are busy, too: Michelle enters a soapbox derby. D.J. sweats the SATs and Stephanie starts a new school and makes a surprising new friend. But the biggest surprise comes last, when Danny gets an offer on the Tanner house at double its value. With the house so full and lives so busy, could it be time for everyone to split up and move on?Since Full House began, Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) has been worried his girls would grow up too soon. In the show's seventh season, D.J. (Candace Cameron) continues to see Steve (Scott Weinger), but now he's in college--and has his own apartment. As for Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), she starts hanging out with an "edgy" junior high crowd (including The Practice's Marla Sokoloff). Nothing bad happens, of course, but it's enough to raise Danny's blood pressure a notch or two. Even Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) is tired of being treated like a little kid, so he eases up on a few rules.

Aside from the Katsopolis twins (Dylan and Blake Tuomy-Wilhoit), who are now walking and talking, that leaves Jesse (John Stamos) and Joey (Dave Coulier). With Joey's assistance, Jesse becomes a leather-clad businessman when he takes over the Smash Club, where his old band got their start. At the opening, Ben Stein shows up as a restaurant reviewer, while the Del Rubio Triplets perform Devo's "Whip It" ("Another Opening, Another No Show"). That's the good news. The bad news hits a few episodes later when Danny's fiancée, Vicky (Gail Edwards), informs him that she's moving to New York ("The Perfect Couple").

For the most part, the seventh season represents a holding pattern for Full House. There are no cast additions or subtractions, but the characters do embark on some new adventures, mostly of the dating variety (plus, D.J.'s hair gets incrementally shorter, while Becky's gets darker). Notable episodes include "The Test," in which D.J. has a nightmare about her SATs (guest starring Vanna White), "The Last Dance," in which Jesse loses his grandfather, and "Too Little Richard Too Late," in which the legendary performer plays a benefit for Michelle's school--with Uncle Jesse on drums. --Kathleen C. Review & Description

As the eleventh season begins, rumors are running rampant around camp. One rumor has everyone believing that Marilyn Monroe is going to pay the 4077 a special visit, while another claims that the peace talks are finally making headway. This second rumor gets Margaret thinking after Charles mentions how a Los Angeles skyscraper had a time capsule built into its cornerstone. Although he thinks the idea is insane, Margaret decides to make a time capsule of her own to bury in camp. “We could put something in the ground to remind people we were here,” she suggested. With Hawkeye’s help, items from around camp were gathered up for the capsule: a chopper’s broken fan belt, Radar’s teddy bear, one of Henry Blake’s fishing flies, a bottle of Charles’s cognac and Father Mulcahy’s boxing gloves.

And finally, the gang of the 4077 hears the announcement they’ve been waiting for:

“This is Robert Pierpoint speaking to you from nearby Panmunjom. It is one minute before ten p.m. We can still hear the sound of nearby artillery. At some point during the next few seconds, the guns should go silent, as the cease-fire officially goes into effect…

There it is. That’s the sound of peace.” Read more

Review & Description

Studio: A&e Home Video Release Date: 08/24/2004 Run time: 550 minutes Rating: NrBenny Hill Complete and Unadulterated catches the boyish, British comedian just after he ended a long association with the BBC (where he was a busy star) and leaped to the commercial Thames Television in 1969, where he enjoyed creative control and successful syndication in America for 20 years. The premiere episode of The Benny Hill Show made television history as one of Thames' first color broadcasts, though a mid-season strike by technicians forced the show to revert to black-and-white, resulting in several "lost" episodes that have reemerged in this boxed set. (They offer some of the best material in this batch.)

Hill is an interesting, internationally popular figure in British comedy, his act more rooted in vaudeville and smooth, lowbrow innuendo than the surreal or topical. He gets a lot of mileage out of a mere roll of his eyes or knowing grin, but he is never short of energy during elaborate sketches or his trademark chases at the end of each episode. The Benny Hill Show, with its emphasis on scantily clad women and endless jokes about getting/not getting sex, never pushes the comic envelope, exactly, but Complete and Unadulterated demonstrates that Hill, who died in 1992, had more ingenuity and diverse originality than his reputation might reflect. Hill is just as comfortable gracing the opening of every show with a silly, risque ditty ("She wouldn't let me marry Jean / She said it was because she thought I was Effeminate / And compared to her, I was") as mocking television itself (in a clever, "Top of the Pops" send-up), skewering suburban swingers ("Henry and Alice and Bob and Mary"), or mounting a Cold War farce (in which an East-West border, running through a honeymoon suite, causes havoc for a newlywed couple). Luckily, this set allows one to select individual sketches or songs (Kiki Dee turns up for a go at "You've Made Me So Very Happy") within all 11 episodes, and to access each episode without having to go back to the disc's main menu. A repeat viewer can easily glide around the full season and cobble together the perfect, best-of program. There's certainly plenty of good material to go around; check out the lengthy "European Song Contest" for a true classic. --Tom Keogh Read more

Review & Description

Benny Hill--Britain's baron of bawdy buffoonery--bursts into full bloom in this boisterous collection from his golden fan-favorite era, The Thames Years! Wildly popular all over the globe thanks to his trademark smirk and affinity for comic naughtiness, Benny rejuvenated the sketch-variety genre with his multi-award-winning THE BENNY HILL SHOW. Satirizing everything under the sun, but sanitizing nothing, Benny and his crackerjack team of entertainers invented a squadron of crazy caricatures: lovable imbecile Fred Scuttle, avant-garde French filmmaker Pierre De Terre, and the verbally challenged Mr. Chow Mein. Backed by Benny's half-dressed flock of frisky foxes, THE BENNY HILL SHOW continues to stand the test of time by making the world laugh itself silly.THE NAUGHTY EARLY YEARS: SET TWO features all 10 riotous episodes from 1972-1974. DVD Features: "Benny Hill: Laughter and Controversy" Episode of A&E’s Award-Winning Series BIOGRAPHY; The Benny Hill Cheeky Challenge Trivia Quiz; "Liner Notes" DVD Insert Booklet; Interactive Menus; Scene SelectionBenny Hill Complete and Unadulterated: The Naughty Early Years, Set Two (1972-1974), a sequel to the delightful Set One (1969-1971), continues opening the vaults on Hill's burlesque and satiric legacy at the Thames Television network. After enjoying stardom on the BBC, Hill made the leap to Thames at the end of the '60s, where he enjoyed creative freedom and the deluxe benefits of a color broadcast. Set Two reveals no slowing down of Hill's prolific imagination, mastery of sketch comedy, or cheeky wit with that old Brit favorite, the sex farce. It does suggest that Hill was willing to gently bite the hand that fed him, however, as several sketches skewer the wisdom of Thames management.

Set Two includes 10 original episodes, never before seen in the U.S. in their complete form. As always, Hill kicks off every show with a "Benny Quickie," or blackout gag, followed by a silly song. ("Oh, Zandoona," a ballad about a willowy young miss, finds Hill--accompanied by house vocal group the Ladybirds--confessing, "Luckily she was blessed with two warts on her chest / Or she'd have no figure at all.") One of the most inspired sketches is an interview with "avant-garde French film director" Pierre de Tierre (Hill), who dismisses heady critical praise from a fawning interviewer. (Calling Pierre a genius for shifting from color to black and white in one of his features, the host is flattened by the filmmaker's response: "No, no. I ran out of color.") Other good things include Hill's impression of singer Shirley Bassey (in a deep-plunging, backless dress, no less), a short film about married thieves (to the tune of Noel Coward's "Little Things"), a lecherous ballet set in a park, and an interview with Hill's crusading, Fleet Steet scandal-monger, Mervyn Cruddy. Another interview, with Hill's slightly dotty Fred Scuttle, is laced with light sarcasm about the state of British TV and, of course, includes much naughty schoolboy humor. (Asked what he would program on a proposed new Thames channel, Fred suggests "A Sale of Two--er, A Tale of Two Cities.") Incorrigible. --Tom Keogh Read more

Review & Description

The Cosby Show appeared on NBC from 1984 to 1992, becoming one of the most popular programs in the history of television. The Cosby Show depicted a close-knit and prosperous African-American family (The Huxtables) that dwelled in New York City. Dr. Heathcliff (OB-GYN) and Clair (attorney) Huxtable were a happily married, dual-profession couple with aspirations of raising their 5 children in an uplifting, positive environment. The Cosby Show held TV's #1 slot for a record 5 consecutive years (1985 to 1990) and stayed in the Top 20 shows for all eight seasons it was on NBC. Read more
